English Guitar Concertosguitar - Craig Ogden, conductor - Richard Hickox , Northern Sinfonia.
With sleeve notes by Craig Ogden, this recording celebrates the 80th Birthday of Sir Malcolm Arnold (2001) and the centenary years of Sir William Walton (2002) and Sir Lennox Berkeley (2003). It also pays homage to the career of Julian Bream for whom all of the works on this recording were written. The CD is dedicated to Craig Ogden's two teachers, John Casey and Gordon Crosskey. Extracts from Reviews"Craig Ogden is a brilliant, persuasive advocate, not only in the Walton but in the Malcolm Arnold and Lennox Berkeley Guitar Concertos". The Guardian (English Guitar Concertos) "All the works were inspired by Julian Bream, to whom Craig Ogden is a distinguished successor. Allied to his superb, agile technique, the range of tonal shading he brings to his playing is of rare richness and subtlety". The Telegraph (English Guitar Concertos) "Craig Ogden perfectly catches the piquancy of Waltons Five Bagatelles, the luscious Englishness of Berkeleys concerto and the quirky playfulness of Arnolds Serenade and Guitar Concerto". The Scotsman (English Guitar Concertos) "There are other guitar concertos than Rodrigos and Craig Ogden has been doing his best to convince people of the fact. The new arrangement of Waltons Five Bagatelles, together with the Arnold concerto and Serenade, makes a very set of very rewarding pieces. Even Lennox Berkeleys melodious atonality sounds marvellous in Ogdens hands". Manchester Evening News (English Guitar Concertos)
